Man arrested for luring Uzbek woman to India, raping her over 6 months

A Mehrauli resident was arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping a 22-year-old woman from Uzbekistan for nearly six months.

Police said the woman filed a complaint on Friday, accusing one Sonu alias Sumit of duping her into coming to India for employment. He had allegedly contacted her through Facebook by posing as a senior executive at a Gurgaon-based IT company. He received the woman at the airport, and offered her a place to stay at Mehrauli.

“Sonu took her passport and money, claiming that he needed to keep them as security deposit. He then moved in with the woman and raped her for nearly half a year,” a police officer said.

The accused was arrested after a medical examination of the woman confirmed rape. Police have registered a case against him, and are investigating if he is part of a larger human trafficking racket.

This is the second case of sexual assault on an Uzbekistan national to be reported in the last one month. On March 15, a woman residing in Vasant Kunj accused her live-in partner and four friends of gang-raping her.
