UP teen, threatened by alleged rapists, found hanging at home

UTTAR PRADESH: Threatened with rape again, a 15-year-old has allegedly committed suicide in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district. The police said the girl hanged herself after three of the five men who abducted and gang-raped her four months ago, warned her of a repeat if she didn’t withdraw her complaint.

All five men have been arrested and sent to jail. A senior police officer has also been suspended for allegedly accepting bribe from the accused. The police are investigating the case.

The girl, a student of Class 9, had gone to buy some stationery items on Friday when the men accosted her. It was a busy market, but she was alone. The men demanded that she withdraw the complaint of rape and threatened her that she would be assaulted again if she insisted on pursuing the case.

The family said as soon as she reached home, she told her mother about the threat and went to her room.

When her sister went to check on her, she found the door locked from inside. The family informed the police, who broke open the door and found the girl hanging from the ceiling.

The girl’s parents say timely action would have saved their daughter’s life.

“Those five men had kidnapped and gang-raped my daughter. We found her five days after the assault. We had immediately filed a complaint. We had even approached the chief minister, but no action was taken,” the girl’s father said.

The station in charge had accepted bribe from the accused to file a closure report in the case, he said.
