Southampton: Former England captain Michael Atherton believes that Pakistan and India not playing Test cricket is a “great shame” for the sport. He thinks it is also one major series that will give the elite format a major uplift.
While talking to Sky Sports Cricket, Atherton along with former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram during rain break on Day 4 of EngvPak second Test said that the possibility of both the teams playing outside of international tournaments are also very less.
“I think the chances of India and Pakistan playing each other outside of ICC tournaments, even at a neutral venue, are minimal at the moment,” he said.
“They seem as far apart as ever from playing each other which is a great shame because it would be the one thing that would give Test cricket a massive boost,” he added.
It must be noted that Pakistan and India last played a Test series in 2007 in India. Both the teams also last played a bilateral series in 2013, comprising of two T20Is and three ODIs.
