Increase in Agri yield to ensure food security, says Dr. Iqrar

FAISALABAD: It is alarming to note that despite being a agrarian country, Pakistan is importing 3 million tons of Wheat worth Rs. 175 billion. For which, it is prerequisite to increase per acre production in order to ensure food security, become self-sufficient in wheat and to curb the crises, said Vice Chancellor of Agriculture University, Prof. Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan.
Addressing a farmers’ convention held in Government High School No1 Shahkot( Nankana Sahib) as part of Punjab government ongoing wheat sowing campaign , he said progressive farmers are getting wheat yields of up to 80 maunds per acre, while our average wheat production is limited to 31 maunds. The timely sowing balance use of fertilizers, drill sowing, eradication of weeds and other methods would increase productivity.
He also said that the country was losing 15 percent of production during harvesting through outdated combine harvester. Therefore it should be repaired or replaced with sophisticated harvesting machines to boost up the production. He said that in China, thousands of the students had been sent in the agricultural fields to get practical experience.
He said that UAF in collaboration with Agriculture, Extension Department Punjab has sent as many as 22,000 students in the farmer field of the five divisions of the province to equip the farming community with latest wheat production techniques. Punjab Agriculture Minister Syed Hussain Jahania Gardezi briefed Prime Minister Imran Khan about the wheat campaign
He said that under the wheat campaign, they are committed to boost up production by 10 percent means three maunds per acre.
He said that Government High School No1 Shahkot school is giving the praiseworthy contribution by producing quality education and recognized at the provincial level.
Pro-Vice Chancellor UAF Prof Dr Anas Sarwar said that the agriculture sector is the backbone of our economy and the poverty alleviation was directly linked with the sector. He said that wheat campaign will bring tangible results.
